Tranings/Certifications: CAPPA trained Birth and Postpartum Doula

Bio: Congratulations on your upcoming Baby!  My name is Alex and I’m a Birth and Postpartum Doula.

My passion has always been babies. While pregnant with my second child, this passion for babies evolved into a
passion for the birth experience. There is nothing more miraculous than the birth of a baby; or awe inspiring than
supporting a woman as she goes through her own birth journey. Helping women during their pregnancy, labor
and delivery as well as those first few weeks postpartum is not only an incredible honor, it’s what I was born to
do.

I am a mother of three and have over 30 years experience with birthing and babies. My first two babies were born
via hospital births; one with an epidural, the second using the Lamaze method of natural childbirth. My third child
was born at home, unattended, with her father ‘catching’ her.

With the birth of my third baby, I became keenly aware of the importance of women giving birth on their own
terms. It was then, as I was preparing to give birth my way (a home birth) I realized how intimidated by medical
interventions women can become.

I am an advocate for a Mother’s right to give birth to her baby in a way that’s most comfortable for her and her
partner.

Over the years, before becoming a doula, I’d supported several friends and family members with their labors and
deliveries. My push to pursue life as a doula came while working as Office Manager for a medical practice of four
doctors. The wife of one of the doctors was a midwife who attended the birth of my step-daughter. One day shortly
after the birth, as I was tending to this new mother postpartum, the doctor pulled me aside and said “you’re in
your element attending births and working with moms postpartum, you need to start doing it” Thank you Dr. T!

Philosophy: A woman’s body is perfectly designed to give birth. It’s important a woman be encouraged to trust
her body and its ability to labor and deliver a baby. When a woman educates herself about the risks of
interventions and medications, as well as their benefits, she empowers herself. She feels confident the
decisions she makes are informed decisions; knowing she is doing what’s best for herself and her baby.

Birth is such an intimate experience it’s equally important a woman in labor feels safe and secure, surrounded
by those she loves and trusts. Having and emotional support team is as vital to her birth experience as having a
medical team.

Pampered … ‘to treat with extreme care and attention’

Giving birth is exciting, yet at the same time can be overwhelming for both the Mother and the Father. This is
when, as a doula, I can be most helpful.

My role is to support and encourage you and throughout your labor and delivery. During this time, I’m committed
to being by your side offering emotional support to both you and Dad/Coach. Additionally, I will provide pain
management and relaxation techniques to help ease you through your labor. And, in the unlikely event of
complications, I can help you understand your options, as well as any alternatives, enabling you to make the best
possible choices for you and your baby. Please keep in mind, I cannot give medical advice; the role of a doula is
to provide you with clarification, education, comfort and support. All decisions are made by you and the Father (or
birth partner).

To me, birth is, and always has been, the essence of being a woman - something to be cherished and
celebrated.  My goal is to facilitate your having the most satisfying birth experience possible.
