Trainings/Certifications: Matrona Certified Holistic Doula (MCHD) and
Doula Trainer; DONA Birth Doula training, 1998; Birthing From Within trained;
Certified EFT Practitioner; Reiki Master/Teacher

Bio:  I began attending births as a doula in 1987, and was trained by a traditional
midwife.  At the time, I was a Bradley Method childbirth educator, and I maintained
that certification for 12 years.  I served as a midwifery assistant for 2 1/2 years in
the late '80s, and I'm also a retired La Leche League Leader, with nine years of
personal breastfeeding experience.  I've attended over 130 home, hospital and birthing center births (and many
more labors), and as a holistic doula, I've also provided nurturing postpartum care to hundreds of families.  I
have taken all 3 levels of Birthing From Within training, and I offer birth preparation classes that combine
Birthing From Within philosophies with EFT (
Emotional Freedom Techniques).  I'm a mother of four, and live
with my husband, children, and pets in northeast Charlotte.
I am semi-retired now, accepting a limited
number of clients for birth or postpartum doula work.  Please call or email for availability.

Philosophy:
My philosophy has been greatly affected by my training, both with traditional midwives and with
Pam England, the author of the book,
Birthing From Within.  I have been privileged to witness a great many
births at home or in birthing centers-- easy, smooth, safe births with minimal to no intervention-- and I've also
read the research regarding evidence-based obstetric care and out of hospital birth.  I trust the process of
labor and birth, I trust women's bodies, and I trust that babies do come out!  I've also worked with mothers who
needed or preferred a great deal of technological support for themselves and their babies, and I recognize that
there is a time and place for everything.  I do specialize in natural (unmedicated) birth, as well as VBACs, and I
have a particular aptitude in working with the energetics of pregnancy, labor, birth and the postpartum.  I
provide compassionate, nonjudgmental support and education for parents regardless of their philosophies
about birth and parenting, their lifestyle choices, race, religion (including none) or spiritual affiliation.

How many births do you attend a year? After being on call for the better part of 20 years, I am currently
semi-retired.  I accept a very limited number of birth and postpartum clients at this time.  Please call or email for
availability.

I serve women birthing at these hospitals:  I am currently choosing to give priority to birth doula clients who
plan a home birth.  If transport is involved, I will absolutely accompany the client to the hospital, as I believe
continuity of care is vital in these instances.

How many prenatal and postpartum visits do you provide?  That depends.  If I am contacted early in the
pregnancy, my goal is to stay connected, so I like to schedule a prenatal visit at least every couple of months if
the parents agree.  If I'm retained late in the pregnancy, we may only do one or two visits before the birth.
Regarding postpartum, I like to provide at least one visit after the birth, and prefer to do more-- usually at 3-5
days, 2-3 weeks and 4 weeks or thereabouts.  That isn't always possible, due to parents' schedules and my
own, so at
minimum I provide telephone support and one postpartum visit.

Additional Services:  I am a Certified EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) Practitioner, specializing in EFT
for the childbearing year.  EFT is a simple system, involving tapping with the fingers on certain points on the
face and upper torso that correspond to acupuncture meridians.  It can be used to help mothers cope with
everything from pregnancy discomforts to labor pain; can help breech and posterior babies turn to a better
position for birth; can help reduce fears(!); and can also help mothers process a difficult or disappointing birth
experience, even a severely traumatizing one.  Plus EFT is often quick, it's easy to learn, and the results are
permanent.  It can be a great support technique for dads too, both to help moms in labor and to help
themselves as they experience their child's birth.
Ask your doula if she knows EFT: if she does, she can be of
even more help to you!  Please visit my website,
