Bio: I am 39 years old (as of 2009), married, and a mother of three
beautiful children.  I delivered my two girls at area hospitals, but my
son was delivered at home with just my husband and I.  The homebirth
was planned however the plan included a midwife present.  She did
not make it to our home in time.  Thankfully, due to my birth knowledge,
I felt totally calm and in control of the situation.  Homebirth is not for
everyone, but I am so grateful that I was able to experience delivering
my son in the comfort of my home with just my husband and I.  It was
so beautiful and intimate.  Six years ago, I would never have even
thought of this as an option, but as a seasoned mother and doula, it
was the best decision for me.  I have a four-year degree in Social Work
and have worked with children for over 14 years.  I am open-minded, caring, non-judgmental, and am light-
hearted.  I feel that enjoying and experiencing life, is what it means to truly live.  And one of the most meaningful
times in anyone’s life is giving birth to a baby.  I have always been interested in the miracle of pregnancy and
the process of birth and delivery.  My three births were wonderful although not “text book”.  What got me
extremely interested in pursuing this as a career was hearing stories of women who had not received the care
and attention they needed or required during birth or post-partum.  In todays HMO world medical personnel are
overwhelmed with many responsibilities and duties and cannot always give their patients the attention they need
during labor.  Most births in hospitals are done with an epidural and nurses/doctors are not familar with many
pain relief techniques or birthing positions.  I want to offer my services in hopes of providing the kind of care
women in labor deserve and desire to help them and their partners through the entire birth process.

Philosophy: Birth itself is a natural unconscious process.  A woman’s body is ideally designed to conceive,
grow, and nurture a baby until it is ready for birth.  We do not have to think about fertilizing the egg,
implantation, dilation of the cervix, pelvis opening, ligaments becoming more flexible, or the baby turning at a
critical point in the birth process.  A woman’s body instinctively knows how to manage these complicated and
complex maneuvers (usually) without any outside interventions.   However, birth for the mom and dad can be an
overwhelming, emotional, unfamiliar, and ecstatically exhausting event.  As a doula I will give my total attention
and support to mom and dad during the entire labor and delivery lending emotional support, pain management
techniques, and medical knowledge.  If unforeseen complications arise, I can help clarify the options, explain
any alternatives available, and help them understand the technologies advised by the medical staff.  A doula’s
role is to make parents aware of their rights and choices regarding care so that they may make the best
decision for them and their baby.  A doula does not to make any decisions or influence families about their care
but assists them in selecting a sound medical choice best for them and their situation.  I see my role as a doula
as to enhance the parents experience in bringing their baby into their family and helping them achieve a
satisfying birth experience.
