What Is A Birth Doula?

Doula is a Greek word for "woman
attendant," or "hand maid."  Our
profession is as old as birth itself.
Women have long been comforted in
birth by the support of other women.   The
modern doula also provides support to
the entire family during labor and birth.
Doulas have experience in supporting
mothers and families in a wide variety of
settings and circumstances.  We provide
continuous, non-judgmental support
throughout the pregnancy and birth.

What Is A Postpartum Doula?

A postpartum doula serves the new family
in the weeks following the birth of a baby.
In earlier times, this support would have
come from the entire village, as well as
from other family members.  Today,
nurturing support and assistance for the
new family during this critical time is often
provided by a postpartum doula.  We offer
information, encouragement, and
reassurance to parents during the
exciting but sometimes overwhelming
transition to parenting a newborn.
