What:  New hope, understanding, support, and
education is coming to Charlotte families struggling
with a locally challenging birth climate and traumatic
birth experiences.  1 in 3 women give birth via
cesarean section and this rate is rising. 1 in 20
women experience traumatic stress following birth.
Rates of Post Partum Depression (PPD) are on the
rise. Women's options in birth are increasingly limited,
especially in the Charlotte area where it is rumored
that some local hospitals are looking to impose
limitations on Vaginal Birth After Cesarean (VBAC).
National tension adds to this, with the American
College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists' (ACOG)
resolution to make homebirth illegal for birthing
mothers.    With the introduction of ICAN of Charlotte, a
chapter of the International Cesarean Awareness
Network, Inc., whose mission is to "improve
maternal-child health by preventing unnecessary
cesareans through education, providing support for
cesarean recovery, and promoting Vaginal Birth After
Cesarean (VBAC)," women and families in the
Charlotte area who have previously felt isolated can
rejoice in being heard, supported, and educated.
